We care about protecting children's eyes from the sun's rays and we look for the best glasses, with protection against all types of sun rays, including ultraviolet ones. But, when we go with the children to the beach and the pool, most of the time they spend in the water. Do we monitor the protection of your eyes underwater?

Discover why it is so important to monitor the health of our children's eyes underwater, Especially in the case of the pool, where the chlorine levels can be harmful to the eyes of the little ones. Diving goggles are not a fadbut a necessity for children.

We are not aware that UV rays pass through the water and that at a depth of 50 cm they exert the same damage as out of the water. The Madrid medical institution of ophthalmology Clínica Rementería (Spain), share with us these five reasons why diving goggles are more useful than for water games:

1. The sun also comes under water: Even submerged under water, 50 cm from the surface, the sun's rays are just as intense. If we use waterproof sun creams so that the skin of the little ones is well protected, diving goggles will fulfill their protective function from the radiation that is received even despite being submerged.

2. Other substances you find under water: Whether in the sea, in rivers, swamps or swimming pools, both germs and bacteria coexist in the water, which can be harmful to eye health, as well as chemical elements that can affect the eye: chlorine, salt, remains of anti-mosquito repellent or of sun cream. A pair of diving goggles will ensure that they are protected from the first dip. “Good water glasses will protect you in your baths since chlorine is extremely irritating, it can cause keratitis and irritative conjunctivitis, so the use of this type of glasses is highly recommended. But not only in the swimming pool, it is also recommended for use in rivers, beaches or swamps ”, warns Dr. Javier Hurtado, Medical Director of Clínica Rementería and head of the Pediatric Ophthalmology area.

3. Look for diving goggles with UV protection, anti-fog and quality: As important as checking on the labeling that the glasses have a UV protection system is that they have an anti-fogging system. In this way, we will avoid that every so often children have to remove and put their glasses on to clean them, allowing water to enter or they end up not wearing them. Three other keys to ensure that they are a quality product is that they have the CE seal and the ISO reference as well as the fact of acquiring them in a trusted establishment.

4. It also protects them from dryness: Curiously, water can cause the mucous membranes to dry out and symptoms of dry eye develop, so the most comfortable solution is to use these diving goggles. If necessary, it is recommended to use artificial tears to refresh and calm dry eyes.

Remember that ultraviolet exposure is cumulative throughout life and that is why it is important that we take into account that children under 3 years old should not be exposed to the sun. It is important to try to avoid photoexposure with all the elements within our reach: sunscreen, hat, umbrella ... Remember that 10% of tumors occur in the eyelid area, hence the importance of eye protection from 6 months of age. If your children complain of pain in the eye, discomfort or spots on their eyelids, you should go to the ophthalmologist.
