Psychologists, pedagogues and experts in different areas of childhood propose different educational methods to help us with the upbringing of our children, to improve their behavior, to avoid disobedience or to encourage effort.

Among all of them, fathers and mothers take those models in which we believe or fit with our way of understanding fatherhood and we begin to apply them from the earliest childhood. But, one fine day, we realize that they no longer work, our son has grown up and they have become childish and obsolete. These are the educational models that do not work with older children.

- Caritas: When children are younger, parents and teachers often use the smiley system to reinforce positive behaviors, or teach them that what they did was not right. We put stamps with smiling or sad faces on their hands or even on the school agenda as a means of communication between parents and teachers. It is a method that is used especially with children with a behavior problem or children with ADHD to reinforce them positively. However, when we talk about children from 9 or 10 years old, this system of faces remains infantile and ineffective, they need other types of reinforcements.

- Thinking corner: It is often widely used by parents and teachers of young children, to teach them, without initiating sermons and eternal talks, that what they did, be it hitting their brother or breaking a toy, was wrong. It is the technique of isolation, of expulsion from bad behavior. However, it is an educational method that does not work with older children, who already know what is right and what is wrong. They are not going to think about that corner, nor is it the way to proceed with children with whom it is already possible to argue and dialogue.

- Cachete: it is never educational, in any case, for any age. It will only teach children to react violently. If we do it with young children, we will only be able to intimidate them and, if they are older, it may not take long for the child to try to hit back. I have witnessed how a father of a pre-adolescent boy applied physical punishment to him and he punched him back. A tremendous situation that should never happen.

- Authoritarian education: It is the classic of educating with a heavy hand, it does not work with older children, nor with the smallest. However, as the child grows and has more capacity to argue, negotiate, think and decide, the only thing that we will achieve with this educational method is to constantly confront the children. Fights and disagreements will flow, the child, who starts a process of rebellion, will tend to make it much more intense and conflicts at home can be even greater.

- Awards: some studies carried out in schools and institutes show this. When we base the child's effort on the achievement of a gift, he or she will simply be striving for the award and we will not be endorsing the idea of ​​working or striving for the pleasure of doing the best possible. With older children, if we establish the idea that the objective is the reward, not the learning, we will not be applying the correct pedagogy.

- Write something 10 times: a punishment widely used by teachers in the classroom. However, it can be humiliating for the child and teased by peers.
